What is Intermittent Fasting?
Fasting, maybe somewhat obviously is not eating or drinking anything, aside from water, for a period of time. Intermittent Fasting is doing exactly that for a period of time daily, or over a period of days in a week. There are benefits to both styles of fasting, but for this article let us focus on Intermittent Fasting.
Intermittent is done daily and creating an eating window, in which you can eat, and the rest of the time you obtain from anything other than water. Based on your current eating style, starting with 8 hours and moving up to 16 hours. Another format commonly used in intermittent fasting is a twice weekly 24 hour fast.
Rather than a diet, this is an eating pattern. Why would you want to try Intermittent Fasting? The most basic reason is people usually feel considerably better. We have a tendency to graze, which does not allow the body the time needed to properly digest foods, nor does it take into consideration the natural liver cycle.
The natural liver cycle is working on digesting foods from 3am to roughly 3pm and then house cleaning and repair from 3pm to 3am. The Standard American Diet, or eating pattern tends to be counter to the liver cycle, with either no breakfast or a carb based breakfast and meals growing as the day goes, with the largest and most protein dense meal coming at dinner.
Dinner times also tend to come after 6pm. When we have a large meal at later hours the liver enzymes are basically all wrong for the work they are being asked to do. The house cleaning crew is on the job and has no idea what to do with all this protein that’s coming through the system.
The benefits of IF can be regulation of insulin, weight loss, less bloating, reduction of inflammation and balancing of hormones. Every person, is of course different, but even one of these experiences would improve how you feel significantly.
